A notary public is a person who is authorized to witness signatures, administer oaths and affirmations, and take affidavits. They can also certify that a document has been correctly executed. A notary does not need to be an attorney or have any form of legal qualification – some are retired lawyers or judges in private practice. There are many reasons why you might want to use a notary public. For example, if you need to sign an affidavit but do not have access to documentation from the other party in order for them to sign the form, then using the services of a justice of the peace or lawyer can prove costly and time-consuming. If you go through a notary public instead, they will only ask for your signature on their form which then authorizes them as your representative with power of attorney over your case before they proceed with taking an affidavit from you.
A California Notary Public has many roles in our society today that include witnessing signatures on contracts, taking affidavits at weddings, and acknowledging documents as true copies of originals when requested by companies such as banks and credit card companies who need such documentation lawfully attested before mailing it off overseas or interstate respectively.
